Wittgenstein's Tractatus and the Self-Reference of Language: 2026
10 S. 11

Every interpretation is, on the one hand, a reduction in comparison with the work it interprets: this applies particularly to the TLP, which evidently (as the secondary literature shows) admits of a multitude of controversial interpretations. On the other hand, every interpretation lays claim to the best possible clarification and explanation of the text, and precisely as a means to this end a reduction is unavoidable. As a whole, an interpretation rests on a basic concept, on a set of hypotheses and decisions with regard to the text: the aim of the present interpretation is, methodologically speaking, an easily comprehensible, systematically developed approach to the TLP, one which in part, however, does not follow the path laid out by the actual composition of the TLP – the aim is the reconstruction of the inner system of the TLP. The idea of such an inner system arises, on the one hand, from the evident disproportion between the demonstrably systematic significance of certain theses and their location in the actual composition of the text and, on the other hand, from the conviction that the aphoristic and in part apodictic theses of the TLP, which refuse any justification, can be integrated into a system. In what follows, the systematic focal points (in the sense of provisional steps of reduction) of the underlying interpretative concept will be briefly outlined.

Focus (1): in my view, the central problem of the TLP is the possibility of representing (the logic of) language by means of (the logic of) language, or: the possibility of representing the logical (formal, essential) properties of the significant proposition by means of a proposition. The questionable propositions here are the propositions of the analysis of sense, of the theory of sense, of logic, and of philosophy in general: they are all "on the Index", and the "logical proposition" (scil. the proposition of logic) in the strict sense of the TLP is to be distinguished from them: "The correct explanation of the propositions of logic must assign to them a unique status among all propositions."
