„The main argument against a discussion of the propositional constituents of the TLP's conception oriented towards the dispute over universals is that such a discussion suppresses, or leaves unexplained, the thesis central to the system of the TLP that propositional constituents (expressions) have meaning *only* in the proposition (cf. TLP 3.3, 3.314, 4.23), and is fundamentally incompatible with it, since the discussion of universals operates, so to speak, on a building-block principle, according to which individual, isolable linguistic units bearing meaning per se (names and predicates) are put together to form a proposition: for this reason, and because new interpretative approaches already exist, the discussion of the problem of propositional constituents that stands under these presuppositions will be left aside."
