„Having sketched the concept of a self-referential formalization and de-formalization as a plausible explanation of the possibility of the significant proposition, we must now ask why Wittgenstein declares a theory of sense to be an illegitimate "confusion of formal concepts with concepts proper" (TLP 4.126) and thereby impossible."

„In this respect "what is essential in a symbol is what all symbols that can serve the same purpose have in common." (TLP 3.341) Showing-f too can be differentiated according to the semiotic dimension of the respective expression: *Semantic* expression: "A name shows that it signifies an object." (TLP 4.126) – i.e.: the name shows-f that it shows-c an object."

„On the other hand, language cannot be explicitly self-referential: if a language system itself represents its possibilities of sense, it falls either into an infinite regress of self-explication or into paradoxes and antinomies, and cancels itself. The solution of the *Tractatus* is: the description of a self-referential system is on the one hand *nonsensical*, on the other hand *superfluous* anyway, for the autarkic-self-referential connection between possibilities of sense and sense is *stable* – possibilities of sense "show" themselves in the use of language (TLP 4.126), and one then does not constantly need to learn new possibilities of sense either."

(TLP-4.1271) …"

„By a (propositional) variable. "The propositional variable signifies the formal concept, and its values signify the objects that fall under the concept." (TLP 4.127) "Every variable is the sign for a formal concept." (TLP 4.1271) …"

NL, S. 214), also Sätze, in denen formale Begriffe als „eigentliche Begriffswörter" (vgl.

„220 f.) Since there are no *propositions* with real (free) variables (cf. NL, p. 214), i.e. propositions in which formal concepts are used as "proper concept-words" (cf. TLP 4.1272) – if anything, expressions with free variables are "schemata" of propositions (cf."

TLP-4.1272)."

„*Its composition* becomes completely *indifferent*. It disappears from view." (NB 21.6.15) The weight here lies on "*essentially simple*" and "*functions*": "essentially" does not allude here – as generally in the philosophy of the early Wittgenstein (and still less in that of the later) – to an essence in things, etc., but means the *function* ("functioning"), the *use* of the sign in the proposition that it has in common with other signs: this mode of functioning (mode of use) constitutes the formal principle of distinction "simple" (semantically autarkic) and thus the variable "x", which as the "variable name" is "the proper sign for the pseudo-concept *object*" (TLP 4.1272)."

„"a, O'a, O'O'a, ..."; the general (variable) term of this formal series can be determined by giving the first term a, an arbitrary x and the operation that produces the following term from the preceding one (cf. TLP 4.1273), in this case therefore: "[a, x, O'x]"."

„This is the general term of a formal series, which can only be expressed as a variable, for it is a formal concept (cf. TLP 4.1273)."
