„The thesis that tautology and contradiction fulfil the postulate of *impossible self-reference* can mainly be documented in the passage TLP 4.46 to 4.4661, in which they are demarcated, as senseless propositions, from significant ones."

„That tautology and contradiction fulfil the postulate of the *autarky* of logic is set out in the passage TLP 6.1 to 6.13, under the motto: "The propositions of logic are tautologies." (TLP 6.1) First, the results of the passage TLP 4.46 ff. are taken up: "Therefore the propositions of logic say nothing." (TLP 6.11) Then the independence of logical propositions from *any kind of experience* is posited as their essential criterion: every conception of logic in which logical propositions are presupposed as carriers of information, as "having content", is false: the tendency to confuse a logical proposition with a proposition of natural science is "a sure sign that it has been construed wrongly." (TLP 6.111) A correct conception of …"

„TLP 5.1 ff.). Among the possible operational schemata there are "two extreme cases" (TLP 4.46): (1) if the operational schema expresses that "the proposition is true for all the truth-possibilities of the elementary propositions" (ibid.), the truth-conditions are tautological; the proposition in question is "unconditionally true" (TLP 4.461), a *tautology*; (2) if the operational schema expresses that "the proposition is false for all the truth-possibilities" (TLP 4.46), the truth-conditions are contradictory; the proposition in question is "true on no condition" (TLP 4.461), a *contradiction*."

„A further piece of counter-evidence: in the TLP there is no formulation that could support Stenius's interpretation, according to which "showing-e" and "saying" are the same. Nor can the converse, "Propositions show what they say" in TLP 4.461, be used as evidence for it; it is evidence rather for the opposite: that the proposition *also shows* that and how (namely positively or negatively, etc.) it *says* something, so that ultimately everything that shows itself and is said can in its turn no longer be said, unless the proposition is repeated: the sense that shows itself can no longer be gone behind (said)."

„TLP 4.461 f.), since they say nothing (cf."

„Among them there are "two extreme cases" (TLP 4.46): tautology, which is true for all truth-possibilities, and contradiction, which is false for all of them. Since tautology and contradiction are senseless propositions (cf. TLP 4.461), for 2 elementary propositions in combination there are 14 possible groups of *significant* truth-conditions, i.e."

„They are part of the symbolism, much as '0' is part of the symbolism of arithmetic." (TLP 4.4611) Just as "0" is a senseless number, the propositions of logic are senseless: tautology admits every *possible situation*, contradiction *none* (cf."

TLP-4.462)."

„They are part of the symbolism, much as '0' is part of the symbolism of arithmetic." (TLP 4.4611) Just as "0" is a senseless number, the propositions of logic are senseless: tautology admits every *possible situation*, contradiction *none* (cf. TLP 4.462)."

„In this respect tautology (and contradiction) is the only legitimate "proposition" of logic, because both principles of the theory of sense (autarky and impossible self-reference) are fulfilled in it. To put it differently: in the propositions of logic, contentual showing is completely cancelled in favour of formal showing (cf., among others, TLP 4.462)."

„*Syntactic* expression: "The fact that the elements of a picture are related to one another in a determinate way represents that things are related to one another in the same way." (TLP 2.15) "The configuration of objects in a situation corresponds to the configuration of simple signs in the propositional sign." (TLP 3.21) *Pragmatic* expression: "Truth-possibilities of elementary propositions mean possibilities of existence and non-existence of states of affairs." (TLP 4.3) "A proposition is the expression of its truth-conditions." (TLP 4.431) "Truth-conditions determine the range that is left open to the facts by a proposition." (TLP 4.463) (cf."

„In the one case the whole of logical space is left to reality, in the other not a single point in it (cf. TLP 4.463): accordingly they say, assert, show-c nothing."

(TLP-4.463) (vgl."
