TLP-6.1222)."

„Wittgenstein's objection to Russell's definition of identity in TLP 5.5302 is directed against the fact that Russell brings into play as a necessary condition that two objects have all their properties in common – a condition that *depends on experience* – and a logical law can never depend on experience (cf. TLP 6.1222)."

TLP-6.1222)."

„**Focus** (2): within the system of the TLP, the question of the possibility of logical propositions has to orient itself by two principles – as Charybdis and Scylla, so to speak: (**a**) the principle of the *autarky of the philosophy of language* and (**b**) the principle of the *impossible self-reference of the philosophy of language*. At several places in his writings Wittgenstein lays down principle (**a**) in the sense of an obligation of language and logic to look after themselves: "Language (logic) must look after itself (speak for itself)." This principle is, among other things, a position on the problem of the foundation of logic, arrived at through several demarcations: first against the empiricist foundation of logic – logical propositions accordingly "cannot be refuted by experience" (TLP 6.1222) – further against a psychologistic foundation, against evidence, against the "self-evidence, which Russell talked about so much" (TLP 5.4731): this "can become dispensable in logic only because language itself prevents every logical mistake." (ibid.) These demarcations exclude any recourse to facts of experience and avoid an infinite regress in this respect."

„are taken up: "Therefore the propositions of logic say nothing." (TLP 6.11) Then the independence of logical propositions from *any kind of experience* is posited as their essential criterion: every conception of logic in which logical propositions are presupposed as carriers of information, as "having content", is false: the tendency to confuse a logical proposition with a proposition of natural science is "a sure sign that it has been construed wrongly." (TLP 6.111) A correct conception of logic must distinguish logical propositions by "a unique status among all propositions" (cf. TLP 6.112; cf. also: B(R), p. 254; NL, p. 186; TLP 6.1231, 6.1222)."

„TLP 6.1222)."

„Since checking the claim to truth of tautology (and contradiction) is (must be) superfluous, logical propositions are not true or false in the same sense as significant propositions: the truth of the latter can only be established by empirical checking; logical "truth", by contrast, makes checking impossible a priori; it must be given autarkically and more or less only *discovered*. Logical "truths" are postulates that result from the postulate of an "adequate notation" (cf. TLP 6.1223)."

„Therefore logic and its application must not overlap." An attempt to represent logic would at the same time be an application of logic; hence the logic *applied in the representation* of logic would clash with the *represented application* of logic: here the pragmatic point of formal self-reference shows itself. Similarly in TLP 6.123: "Clearly the laws of logic cannot in their turn be subject to laws of logic."

„and passim) – they are not a purely didactic requirement, in order to make visible the internal relation between the propositions involved, essential for the inference, to someone who does not recognize the nature of the inference from these propositions alone, rules by which logical propositions are inferred from others are already technically superfluous and, with regard to the "philosophy of logic", even *misleading*. A logical proposition cannot *itself* be proved logically, for this would presuppose that the laws of logic are "in their turn subject to laws of logic" (TLP 6.123)."

„2.3); secondly, there are both generalized tautologies – such as "(x) Fx ∨ ¬Fx" – and non-generalized tautologies – such as "Fa ∨ ¬Fa" (cf. TLP 6.1231): logical propositions are *formally (essentially) generally valid* (cf."

„This difference comes out very aptly in the case of the sign "is", behind whose "outward form" several symbols are concealed: (1) ascription of a predicate: "Fa"; (2) membership of an element in a class α: "x ε α"; (3) inclusion of one class in another: "α ⊂ β"; (4) expression of identity: "x = y"; (5) expression of existence: "(Ex) Fx" (cf. TLP 3.323). *Secondly*, to the distinction between "*essential*" and "*accidental*" generality: TLP 6.1231 f. shows that a logical proposition is essentially generally valid, in contrast to the significant proposition (e.g."
